The Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower

This grand old tower was built in 1909 for a life insurance company. The building is still around but is no longer used to sell insurance, instead the building is being converted into the New York Edition hotel by the Marriott hotel chain.

According to wikipedia the minute hands on each clockface weigh half a tonne each. The tower is also featured on Futurama, but with a digital clock face, rather than the current ones.

The Golden Gate Bridge, USA

It is claimed by many that this is one of the world’s most beautiful bridges with tremendous towers, sweeping main cables and great span. The Bridge can be an extremely busy place particularly during the summer months and it is estimated that approx. 9 million people from around the world visit the Bridge each year. Pedestrians and cyclists can access the sidewalks during daylight hours but is it recommended that as the Bridge is 1.7 miles long, you are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and layered clothing.

Burj Khalifa, Dubai

Whilst rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous on holiday in Dubai, make sure you take time out to visit the Burj Khalifa which its inhabitants believe is the tallest building in the world. This awesome piece of architecture is surrounded by hotels, must-visit shopping destinations and a world of entertainment options. The best part of your visit to the Burj Khalifa is the view from the Observation Deck located on Level 124 promising outstanding views of Dubai.

The Petronas Twin Towers, Malaysia

These awe-inspiring towers rise approx. 1,483ft in the heart of Kuala Lumpur and are the glimmering crown of this beautiful capital city. The shape of the Towers is inspired by Islamic Art and the gleaming steel & glass structure is based on an eight-pointed star. The Towers are joined at Levels 41 and 42 by a 192ft long double-decker Skybridge that links both sky lobbies and allows movement between the two towers. Why not head to level 86 and admire the magnificent views of the city below but make sure you have a head for heights as it is a long way down!

Kingdom Tower, Saudi Arabia

With almost every country across the world vying for the title of having the world’s tallest building, The Kingdom Tower leaves them in the shade stretching 3,280ft into the Saudi Arabian sky. Whilst in Saudi Arabia you can take in the wonderful views from the viewing platform but again, you will definitely need to have a head for heights. The inspiration for the structure comes from the folded fronds of young desert plant growth which is appropriate considering the building is located in the middle of a desert. This sprawling piece of fine architecture will have 59 elevators, luxury flats, offices and a Four Seasons Hotel.

There’s a lot of awe-inspiring architecture to be found across the world, some of it is as old as time itself, and some of it’s brand spankingly new. One great way to view the ancient and modern wonders of the world is to hop on a sightseeing tour, grab your Lonely Planet guide and sit back and watch the world go by….

The Shard, London

Once completed, The Shard will be the tallest building in Western Europe. Taj Mahal, India

This magnificent building was first constructed in 1631 and took at least 22 years to build. The ruler at the time was Shah Jahan, popularly known as Prince Khurram and he married the beautiful Arjumand Bano Begum but when she died in childbirth, he dedicated the Taj Mahal to her. When you pay a visit to India, make sure you check out the Taj Mahal during both the day and night because it is believed that this beautiful structure appears to be a different colour, supposedly to depict the moods of a woman. The Taj Mahal attracts 2.4 million visitors annually with over 200,000 from overseas and when you get up close to this amazing structure, you can certainly see why.

Sydney Opera House, Australia

No visit to Australia would be the same without making a stop in Sydney to see the mighty Opera House. It was recognised as one of the most outstanding places on Earth with its inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List in June 2007 and when you have the mighty Opera House in front of you, it’s hard to not see how this is a masterpiece of late modern architecture. The structure was completed in 1973 and has earned a reputation as being a world-class performing arts venue and it has become a symbol of both Sydney and the Australian nation.
